Hello, my name is Cam! I'm a dev (game, web, and software) and artist that has way too many hobbies and never enough time to do them all.
2. How long have you been making websites?
If we count using website builders, I think I made my first site in college around 2020. Part of our final in classes with our coding professor required us to make a portfolio. Otherwise, I started my first site in 2024 sometime.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
Partially being tired at feeling restricted by website builders. Images have to be displayed a certain way, working with their block style builders can be confusing too. I've been told that having your own personal site was the way to "own your personal brand" and was good for job prospects so I made a site to hold my projects.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
I love seeing sites where people post their devlogs but honestly anything where I can see some sort of art or project start to form.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I really did try to plan out this website but all my first attempts were hideous. I've found it's served me better to just browse other personal sites and adapt features I like or think of as I go.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
I like how it can either be chill or intense. I can be easing into things and winding down before bed like rn, or working in the morning, ready to add some new feature.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Design probably. Graphic design is *not* my passion :.(
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
I do. I heard somewhere that it was best for accessibility and although I do get kinda tempted to change it on certain pages, I don't want to remove that accessible aspect.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Somewhat.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
I didn't even know this existed until today.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
I don't really have one tbh.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Usually it's a blog post so I copy paste the formatting that allows it to be sorted into the collection correctly.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
A little.
15. How about PHP?
Kinda. I'm pretty rusty though. I had to learn some for a now defunct fashion game I made made to be played in a web browser.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Is brown and pink a theme?
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
Content. After all, doing a redesign can be become an event, rewritten content may never be seen.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
I own two actually.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
As long as I can read the text.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I literally didn't even know it could be not valid.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I think they're cute! I need to redesign my button though. I just put it together quickly as a requirement for my webring, I wanna make a cuter one. Ultimately I wanna make little buttons for all my stories too.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I hope to have a small one in my links page one day.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
I might go with a completely different layout but it would probably end up pretty similar.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Envy is a distraction from sharing joy with others.
25. What text editor do you use?
VS Code
26. Why do you use that one?
It's what I use for almost all of my projects and it works so I never thought of trying out something else.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
Netlify, which is not technically my host cuz I set things up in a confusing way lol
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
More personal sites mean more cool spots on the internet to go!
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
That is a great question. Probably not much since I don't have many images, although I don't try to optimize what images I do have so IDK
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Haha no. Before I didn't have the space but I've since doubled my hard drive space so I'll do that.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Both have their charm. I just need it to be navigatable.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
I stick to brown pink and white for main elements because I need stuff to have contrast for the sake of it being readable.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
No? I not even sure what quitting would mean in this context because I've already made the site. I'm already a web dev and will always have been one. You can't unflip the switch.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I don't have any. The ways to connect to other webmasters such as email feel *extremely* personal and that makes me feel really shy. I just recently joined my first webring and that was a super scary idea at the time!
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Only like one person. It just doesn't come up much.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
No, I wish. Sometimes I don't have much to say, sometimes I'm busy with other projects instead.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I might change some little things including having all original site assets at some point, but I think the overall design is one I'm sticking with.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Hobby focused
39. Do you do web design professionally?
No
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
I don't really know. I feel like making corporate sites would be a lot less fun.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
No not really.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I do. I only really actually post on bluesky though. The other social media is for lurking or keeping in touch after events.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I'm on Discord everyday.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
It depends. Right now I'm not listening to anything and just enjoying the sound of my keyboard.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I have a portfolio site as well that I keep separate.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
This site has been mostly game dev so far but I'm expanding it to cover art and maybe have a shrine or two as well. It feels more homey that way.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I do now. I used to try to present a more polished version of myself. That's less an online vs IRL thing and more a growing more comfortable in my own skin and with who I am thing though.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
No
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Happy enough. The only language I have beef with is C.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Having super small pixel text, not being mobile friendly, not linking out
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Not sure
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I try to follow the example set in my template so semantic when I remember.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
No, although since almost everything is Chromium now I kinda figure it's ok? I have no excuse for not testing Firefox though, when I'm in Linux like I am now, it's literally the default.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
Vivaldi. No AI.
55. And what OS are you on?
I dual boot on my desktop so Windows 11 and Kubuntu there and then PopOS on my laptops.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
I don't care what you use, but don't shy away from Linux just because you were told it was hard. People really overhyped it's difficulty.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
My main one is, my portfolio isn't fully I don't think.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
Please no
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I think they're a super fun idea. I'm in one so far but want to join more.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
No but I have some plans to make one. I think shrines should be highly visual. It would be fun to see stuff like poems or other content not usually seen on other pages of the site.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
I don't know what this means. How would websites as a whole be cliche?
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
They should be full of self expression. They should update every once in a while, kinda randomly so it's worth having a bookmark but like not as much of a constant barrage as social media.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
I am! Not all of them.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
Foollovers!
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
I don't have many habits around web dev honestly. I'm working on developing some.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Websites are the perfect project. You can start with a single page and they can always be built upon. Look at other small web sites. How these are made and common sensibilities are different from big websites so you'll often find cool and more applicable design trends here than on bigger sites.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I hardcode some.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
No opinion.
69. How about table-based layouts?
No opinion.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I use a two column layout.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
Neither. Since I use astro and most of my updates are my collections (like my blog) I spent the most time modifying markdown.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
No
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I only make layouts when I have to haha
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
More of a beginner
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Not often. I really only look if there's something I want to adapt and I'm not sure how to approach it.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
The astro build a blog tutorial and lots of googling.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
I don't think so
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
No real opinion.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
It really depends. I try all of them and see which looks the best.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
No
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
I'm not sure. I wouldn't mind running a site for someone but running with is something I'm a bit wary of.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Somewhat. Everytime I do though, I end up spending a few hours on it lol
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
I do! I prefer when people have RSS feed though. I would be excited if someone bookmarked mine!
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
My art I guess. I don't really need anyone to be impressed, it's enough if they relate to it in someway.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
I am! I made a media server, have tried a few Linux distros, and make games and software as well. I don't really collect anything though.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
I end up online everyday. Usually I'm watching Youtube or in Discord calls but I spend a lot of time researching stuff too. I try to spend some time offline everyday too but the success of that varies haha
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
People who would be interested in my creations.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
I didn't know what it was until just now.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
I do! And I have once. I mentioned a defunct browser dressup game I made in college which I used Unity, C#, PHP, and SQL to make. I honestly might make it a goal to bring that back up some day. I had a lot of fun making it, and while it did spawn another game idea, that idea is huge and I'd have to prove interest in it anyway.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I use one! Astro is what I use for my sites. I might try without Astro one day just for the experience, but I kinda doubt that.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I do not. So when I first started this site I had a lot of troubles presenting things I wanted because I wanted and not because I wanted to impress people. I knew that if I had a hit counter, I would put pressure on myself to be more impressive and this website would become yet another stressor. It's the same reason I don't have comments or interactions. I want to share but share authentically.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I do not. I joined a few and I used to be on the RPGMaker forums back in the day. But nowadays I'm not really on them, I should try to be more active since I like the vibes of most forums I see. Plus I owe so much to forums since that's often where the answers to questions I have while troubleshooting come from.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Directly into the editor. It has a different vibe when I write in Obsidian first.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
No. And people have said the things I do are cool or my job, but I don't think anyone would describe me as cool. Sweet, yes. Funny, occassionally. Cool, no.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
I used to be. I often went on deletion sprees to rid myself of old work, which hurts me now when I want to participate in trends involving redrawing old stuff. I used to be really ashamed of my old games too but I played them again and was surprised. They were just normal, mid visual novels and I suspect if I still had a lot of the old work I deleted, I'd feel the same way about it.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I'd try to figure out how to leave and archive. It'd feel sad to completely shut it down.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I think I'm pretty open. I trying to be more of my true self on here as practice for real life so in some ways I'm more open on here than in my real life.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
I don't really believe in having just one best friend. I do have a friend who's website I've been meaning to add to my links page though.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
Haha no. I should though
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
